when shortening forks you don't cut down the tube. if anything, wouldn't you cut the side that's not threaded on the inside of the lower slider, then shorten the spring?

I'd rather have them cut the tops and rethread because down the bottom it has a nice teflon coated bushing for less 'stiction' and I'd rather keep that;I'd use fork springs from a CB350.

The question IS... how much "travel" do you have now? you want to shorten the forks by as much as five inches. If you only have five inches of travel you cant shorten the springs to get all five. Your plan to cut the top and machine new threads is a good plan, but the rebel may have a common stanchion to other length Honda stanchion tubes and you may be able to just eBay up a set ready to go. I would get some suspension guru advice for sure.

To build a 1977 CB750 with Kawasaki GPZ mags (i.e. a poor man's Morris Mags)

KZ650 tree + KZ750 forks + KZ550 axle + Mr E Machining split shims to adapt the 550 axle to the 750 fork + 1 1/2 CB750 axle spacers.

I also have a pr. of CB400F fork legs and I could swap the 33mm tubes(I can also use those springs) into the Rebel lowers.., but I'd rather see if I can have the tubes shortened and go w/ the shorter springs.

1979 CM400t with 05-06 CBR600RR USD forks. Straight swap - just got new tapered roller bearings for the CM.

1977 GS550 with 08 GSX650F forks (also wheels & swingarm which was shortened 3.5").

Sweet. I've seen one other person use RS125 on smaller bikes (CB175 specifically). They are surprisingly affordable if you can find a complete set. Looks great!

one day in the distant future (after the CB750 is finished and the vmax is modified to my satisfaction) the baby BSA will become a trials bike (even i'm not stupid enough to consider putting it on the road, even with its new motor and g/box its still suicidally slow)

'We' had a C10L and a C11G. Both would run OK on paraffin after being started on petrol ;D
Pretty sure if it had had a decent set of forks we would have gotten into even more trouble

Don't have any finished pictures, just the ones I took while making stuff fit.
Early Katana (pre-97) forks on CB360, CB350 front hub, XS650 rear rim. I made the headlight mountings, 41mm fork tubes
They were pretty worthless 10~12 yrs ago, you could pick up GSXR for couple of hundred. If set of GSXR cartridges turn up cheap on eBay, I'll fit them inside 8)

I'll try to post a pic later but I used a 1979 Honda xl500s front end on my 73' cb360 also used the 23" wheel, had to use the stem out of the cb and machine the lower tree from the xl to fit the cb stem. Use all stock cb bearings hope this makes sense.

1987 Honda CBR600F1 Hurricane front end for my 1974 TX500 (in progress):
I had to make an entire new stem at work, block the forks parallel, slide the new stem into the triples, tighten it down on the new upper, and then weld the bottom of the stem into the new lower triple. Still have to get the wheel spacers made and line up the brakes.


And, my old 79 CB750K with an 82 CB750SC front end and wheels. This was an almost straight swap. I needed new bearings. I think the SC stem was the same length and spacing, but 1mm bigger, so conversion bearings were used. It also had air adjust and dual disc brakes. (I never actually HAD to use my rear brakes after this swap.)
