Re: 1981 Suzuki Gs400

i like your profile picture. thank you...lol. and that bike you just posted is pretty friggin' sweet. do it.

Re: 1981 Suzuki Gs400

I say stick with the scrambler with Metisse style pipes, that'll be sweet and unique ;)

Re: 1981 Suzuki Gs400

Pete i do like how the scrambler looks in my head. Mixture of both of the bikes maybe? Itd definately be unique

Re: 1981 Suzuki Gs400

I've been thinking about this. Anyone chime in if they know! But i like kickstarts, im wondering if a '79 gs400 side engine cover, kickstart mechanism and using the clutch bell (which i assume the gear to kick it over is on) is able to be put into the 81 engine. Would be nice to lose the huge battery and run capacitator. If not i need a smaller battery and they are expensive, and customs will likely stop a battery from going through.

Now i remeber someone saying mobility scooters have a 12 volt battery that works great.

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

Its a no go on the kickstart conversion.

Also got in shit at work for the profile picture, sorry guys!

Got the name for the bike! The Shot!

By the way waiting for parts sucks!!! Once some stuff arrives in the mail... this will truely commence!

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

Oooops on the avatar... haha... I generally stick to safe ones...

Waiting for parts does suck, but once they arrive you'll love it :)

Also, they do make smaller gel batteries and so forth that would work nicely...

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

Thanks pete! i have been told about the gel ones before. $129 or somethin from DCC but they wont pass customs. i havent been able to find anywhere in canada that sells them, candian tire might

Someone will sell them... tried a jetski dealer? Just don't go the lithium ion path unless it's something like a Shorai that has built in battery management. If you get the cheapie ones that are just the cells hooked together you risk the cells exploding as the standard charging system can't monitor individual cells.

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

ill see about a jetski dealer. arnt any around here thats for sure. Toronto has to have atleast one. Ill check it out. Thanks pete

Good luck! I only suggested that because I've seen a couple of online ones here that seem to stock small batteries, so hopefully it'll be the same for you guys. Someone's gotta have them surely...

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

Merry Christmas everyone! I got my parts for christmas! Well really they came in Friday ;D

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

I never have any updates! sorry guys! been moving slow, i have parts but work alot this week (retail at christmas  )

Anywho, i cant decide on a frame colour. i kinda wanna stray from the normal black frame. For some reason i want to paint it purple, yep purple! but itd be a little crazy, maybe a really dark purple, satin black engine and dark metallic grey tank and others, with black rims. still lookin for spoked rims!
trip to Cycle salvage after work tomorrow should fix that :D

Another issue was the tank... that triple bar thing is a challenge. Found a tank that could work. Honda cm185 twinstar tanks, with a few customizations, will work on suzukis, and have a nice rounded shape.

Itll start pickin up here soon!

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

Ive been busy lately but heres a little update.

To all following this thread, its gunna be moved to the bobber thread. Sorry to all that wanted a cafe, but ive been bitten by the bobber bug! Hope you all will still enjoy.

Any who, cut off excess length at the back of the frame today. Juat to get a better look at what it will be, and to get a bunch of uneeded metal out of the way.
I also cut tabs today, with a hacksaw  air compressor is down so i cannot use my air tools :( but itll be fixed in the next few days! YES!!! ;D
Not sure whether im gunna use this as the electrical box or not. I have a million of these tins sitting around, but i plan to attach both of them together, with jb weld. First off i cut the bottom out of it. All i used was some wire cutters and patience, bent the fold up and the bottom popped out.
Last but not least, i mocked up a fender, just to see. Take not that those are not the shocks im using. i just have em on there to roll it around ::)

Next up is to drain the oil out of it and get that engine out! Ive really slacked on the engine department. I am however thinkin of selling this engine, and getting an older one with kickstart, if anyone has one or knows somebody with one, let me know :)

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

Looking good - I grew up smelling Players Light from my dad smoking it (regulars). He quit cold-turkey years ago when the grandkids started coming along.

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

Coincidently those are my dads old tins aswell. He's given me about half of them. (10 or 12) He did the same when i was born, just immidiately stopped.

Re: Jello's "The Shot" Gs400 build

Finally had some time to work on the Zuki! :D

The original throttle i had for it was junk. Well it actaully work but someone wreck the threads for it to clamp to the handlebars, and i didnt want to go through re-threading it, so i used this. Its from a 1960's Motobecane moped. I had to cut and file a few things like the old lever perch. This throttle is great, you can tighten up the sliding mechanism in the throttle onto the cable, that way you don't need to have the knob on the end, and it is really easy to make a cable work for it.

I grinded down the brake and clutch levers so they dont have that ball on the end, looks much better now!
Whoever has had a suzuki bike with the stock tank, they know that the gas cap is horrid, and it is really hard to find a cap that fits that tank (that isnt expensive, It wouldnt be alot but id way rather spend my money on something more needed) Anywho, i took an old lawnmower cap i had sitting around and took its twist and lock style piece of metal off. Next i took apart the suzuki cap. Using the old snaping mechanism (without the lock) i placed it under the lawnmower cap. I had to file off fin like things on the side of the mechanism so it could spin (explained later) Next tapped holes for new screws i was using to attach the snap mechanism to the cap. After trying it the first time the cap wouldn't snap onto the tank, so i had to make a small washer to put between the cap and the snap mechanism for it to snap in. Now to use the gas cap you push it into the tank and you will hear 2 snaps, then to take off just twist until it pops out of the existing slots, and it comes right out!

I decided i was going to use stock cb125 handlebars, yes stock bars, but i think they look sweet on the bike!
