Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid/ Christine: CASE BACK OPEN...

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...shiny stuff (pic heavy update)

Lock wiring sorted!

Tomorrow, there is the slight possibility I might get this thing running again. Here is hoping!

Oh man, in the words of the immortal Dr. Emmet Brown: "Something I did actually works!!"

After lots of screwing around to gather the necessary fittings, hose clamps, etc, etc, and one interruption trip to the local brewery for a pre-Christmas pint with some friends, I managed to get some gas in this thing and make it run! Still a long ways from being on the road, and it appears my pipe coating isn't going to work (Jet Hot now?), but it runs. Also, it it a little lean, at least in the midrance as you can see--it breathes fire! Ha, the "Danger, Jet Blast" sticker is functional!

So stoked about the way this thing sounds and acts now. Has attitude to match the look!

For some reason, the video didn't seem to embed. Click on the picture or this link if it doesn't work

Got a couple pics, too, to show the overall look as it stands, now.

Got new grips in the mail to replace those. Not much now till after Christmas, but a pretty good milestone indeed!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...it runs, with VID

That sounds like just plain nastiness!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...it runs, with VID

Holy shit man! That thing sounded mean with the old muffler, now it's just plain pissed off. Bad ass!

It'll be cool to see what kind of gains you get from this and the unrestricted pipe...

Edit: And hey, have you looked into the silver CF yet? I've completely spaced it, but I'm ready when you are to start making some molds.

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...it runs, with VID

Thanks for the props, boys! I am really excited with thie project far. It is turning out exactly as I had hoped.

Chris, I looked into it a little. It is actually not carbon fiber, but aluminum coated fiberglass called Texalium. Kind of neat stuff, just the same, and I assume just as easy to work with. Here is a link that describes it a little better:

http://www.carbonfibergear.com/colored-carbon-fiber-is-usually-texalium-but-what-is-texalium/

I want to finish getting the rest of the bike sorted, and then will start the fender, for sure!

Ha, I was complaining at the Mrs. that this was taking so long. She (not so gently) reminded me that I started this remake at the first of November. I guess it just seems like a long time... :D

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...it runs, with VID

Aluminum coated glass? Well how bout that! Sounds like it would be a perfect match with everything else. You leaning that way? Or CF?

And miss the chance to say my front fender is made of Texalium? Definitely have to go this route! ;D

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...it runs, with VID

Well, except for the front fender work, and coating the pipe, this thing is nearing completion until I can ride it and get it dialed in. I took it outside to take the pics for some shameless thread picture whoring.

And a shot of the new grips I got--for $13.00 off Ebay! The things are machined aluminum in all the places that are not rubber. Not the best machine work, but good enough for this kid.

Since my mirror is on the LH bar end, I had to take the sweet cap off for the mirror to go on. But, it turns out it is exactly the same size as the ignition switch, so I got a sweet ignition key bezel as well!

Incidentally, I am thinking about sending the pipe out for a Jet-Hot treatment. But I am not decided on this. I have also thought about white wrap too. What do you guys think?

A walk around video to come soon as soon as my upload speed will allow! Sorry to dump pics on y'all, but I'm pretty excited about how it is turning out! ;D

The video, provided you have the stomach to watch it :-\. I was trying to keep it short, so it would upload faster, so it is kind of jerky. Also, I have a cold, not emphysema as the sound might indicate :D

It's times like this I wish I had a laptop instead of my phone at work - the tiny screen just doesn't do it justice.......

In the meantime though, your pics reminded me of this:

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid". Pic whoring on page 28

Thanks, bud. That video was sheer poetry... *sniff* :'(

Back to the bike, I am really thinking about white wrap for the pipe. I hate sending my stuff out, and it's a whole lot cheaper. I think it would fit, but what do you guys think?

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid". Pic whoring on page 28

I'm on the fence about wrap. I'm getting somewhat tired of seeing full exhausts wrapped purely for looks. I think it's appropriate for areas that need protection from the heat...

It looks good in some cases, but be prepared for some asshat comments when this bike makes it on Pipeburn or BikeEXIF (which it will...)

Your call man, if it's what you want, do it! Screw em!

ETA: Yeah I know, I did it on the 400. So take it for what it's worth! ;D

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid". Pic whoring on page 28

Now see, that is great feedback!

At this point I am just kind of holding off to clear my head on it a little bit. This build has been going on for two months, and I've obsessed about it the entire time, so my judgement is a little clouded. I was really hoping the silver paint would work, but even with the right curing, it just flakes right off when the bike warms up the first time. The ceramic coating is probably the way to go, I just hate sending stuff off that much! The other problem is that I don't want to go back to black. Has anyone had any kind of experience with ceramic coaters? I've always just bought coated parts, instead of having them done. If not, I guess I will be the G-pig. Time to go research that now...

I gotta disagree about the bike blog thing, though. That is only reserved for the really great builds!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid". Pic whoring on page 28

But see, this is a great build. It's hard for me to put into words what I think defines a really great build, but, among many factors, I know it's one that evokes something from waaaaay deep down inside you. I can look at a lot of very nicely crafted machines and not get too worked up about them. It's the ones that jar something inside you, that make that inner kid go "holy shit, look at that fighter jet robot looking piece of awesome!" The grown-up part of me admires the fancy alloy, go-fast, etc., parts... but that little guy inside is going ape-shit for no other reason than associating the bike with something that influenced my perception of 'what's cool' when my gullible young brain was developing. I think if you can build something that elicits that kind of response (even when your conscious brain doesn't realize it), you're golden. Hell, look at the Gulf; it's the exact bike I would've wanted when I was ten. Loud, garishly bright...it looks like a toy ;D

Just my over-caffeinated thoughts!

About the wrap, you could always try it. Wouldn't put you out much, certainly less than ceramic...

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid". Pic whoring on page 28

Ha! +1........

Tyler, you have to give yourself some credit. This bike looks nothing like what it started out as. It DOES however, look like something from a Transformers movie ( :D ). I'm not 100% on white wrap either...... maybe the titanium kind though? Or maybe some ceramic coating with a polished aluminum shield in front?

Either way, Tim has ceramic coating on one of his bikes......probably the XS. But I remember saying he really liked it. How long would it take to have the pipes sent out for ceramic coating? Couldn't be too long, and you do have the rest of winter to wait it out.
