Spray Gun vs Spray Paint - The Debate Thread

I don't worry about it on my paint because I paint my bikes correctly and don't HAVE to worry about it. I wipe it off when I'm done filling up, but I don't have a panic attack about it either. I've seen gas spill on rattle can paint, it's exciting watching all that hard work literally dissolve before your eyes.

With 2k clear I have no worries on gas. I wipe it off with the paper towels and that's it. My CX gets gas on pretty much each time I get it because it goes from almost full to overflow in a split second.

This is true of single stage. With the 2k, leave it till you finish then wipe it off. No panic, no damage.

I think I'm going to paint a couple test panels and put them to the test. I have my doubts about SprayMax. I'll order a can this week and do some video and pics. Yes, I'm going to spend $20 on a can of clear coat just to try and destroy it with gas. You know, I'll make it official too, SprayMax panel will get DupluColor base and SEM rattle can primer too. If it holds up longer than 5 mintues, I'll be incredibally surprised.

Not yet, that was 10 min after last coat.
Ah, paint always looks really good wet, even 1k.

My gun paint job makes my dry paint look like your wet or a ploshed can job without the polishing. After I polish the gun paint, the can job cant touch it.

I used to use the can 2k paint primer & clear too with high quality auto mixed base in cans, which is as good as you can get with cans. For me gun is superior and these theads about can vs gun are a bit redicluous to think otherwise considering the technology in the guns vs a spray can tip and the plathora of paint available for guns.

Its also more then just looks as a test of quality. Durability can not be quantified with a picture. My gun finish is like I painted hard candy on it that is very durable. My can jobs..gotta watch out for scratches.

Where gun jobs are closer to can jobs is usually the lack of experince using guns or bad product is the issue. I have learnt this myself even. But I would chalk up bad product to lack of experince as well.

It should. I have had my CX tank going on its 3rd season and it has gas on it 10 x season and it looks as good as the day I sprayed it. It is 2-part expoxy so it should be just as good.

All true, but I have to use cans at the moment so I do the best I can.

Ha, I hear you on that. Feels like those dang CX tanks (custom) can't hold squat.

The great thing about real paint is that you can buy a pint or half pint of base coat depending on what color you need and paint a whole bike for $15. I buy base coat that's ready to spray so just pour it in the gun and done.

Yep, this is true, if I am going to start doing more than a couple of bikes a year I will be getting a gun etc. The volume will pay for the investment for sure.

...All spray paint...
