why keep it normal 78 goldwing slow build...

That's a good idea. The manifold has fuel passages that can clog though, that's when it needs pulled apart, or a gasket leak...

I hope so because other then electric and carbs sometimes the engine its self is very stout or so Im told

I have well over 180k miles on mine. Had to do head gaskets once. Belts 4 times now. Maybe 5. Ive only been left stranded 2 times on mine in the 120k miles Ive owned it. Head gaskets failed 55 miles from home after 300 of adding water to keep riding and the damn dyna frying.

Ah....I dont have those....that's why I never remember.
Maritime or pidjones....what brand and where are the best head gaskets purchased? I'm pulling my 76 ones for fun...curious to see condition of cylinder, pistons, etc....

I've used Vesrah (Japanese), Athena (Italian), and Honda (Japanese?) with good results, but others swear by Honda only. I've read that the Baracuda gaskets are re-designed and US made, but....

This is not a thing that I would do out of curiosity. As long as compression is good, your valves should be fine. Valve stem seals can be replaced without pulling the head - feed cord into the spark plug hole and crank the piston up until it presses the chord against the valves.

Head, block, headbolt and thread cleaning are critical and time-consuming. If you go there, make darn sure the head AND block are level.

Thanks. It's the winter project. Waiting on new compression tester, but something is not well. When I got it the pistons were stuck, the p.o. had it sitting outside with every plug pulled, cylinders filled with marvel mystery oil but lots of water still in them....it was nasty.

I don't worry about water in the oil as much as in the crankcase. As long as you have good compression, the rings will pretty much clean everything up, I think. I did "shave" a couple cylinders with single-edge blades, but they had bad compression.

Hey left field kind of question but do you know if there is an aftermarket air filter box that mike bring down some of that bulk of the stock one
