You have to be careful with RDs/XS650.
Well that said the XS650 will not run with an eliminator - without a PMG conversion. All models of XS650.
Some of the RDs had field controlled generators - these models will not work with an eliminator as its the same system as the XS. BUT the E & F...
Theres some info here for an SR 500:

get some good copper leads and you won't go wrong. You don't need super expensive.
the thing to avoid is carbon 'string' used on most cars. I had this in one of our test units - I was checking it for electrical safety over the hols and decided to replace the HT leads in it for some off cuts in...
On a Magneto the pulses alternate positive to negative, because magnetos are AC devices - which is why you used to have to swap spark plugs round on multicyclinder magneto ignition engines so they'd wear evenly. On battery ignition the polarity doesn't change.
Whats happening is a coil tries to...
We can run them on a a physical rig or electronically. what we can't do is track the dely from input to reponse - a good scope will do this and is on our list.
My comments are based on the weight of scrap metal we weigh in from our failed componets bin. Dyna coils forming the main bulk of this.
90% of CDi igntions are basically electronic magnetos IE they are powerd directly from the generator and have no connection to the 12 volt system. There are a few out there that use inverters to ramp up the voltage, the very early Kawasaki H1 springs to mind - you can hear the inverter humming...
Nope its a brilliently simple system. Way better then a plain zener. Basically they regulate the AC with 2 scrs back to back - then feed the regulated AC into a bridge rectifier to give the DC portion. So long as the regulator is in circuit the Ac is always controlled so it doesn't blow the bulbs.
Yes and no.
Thats a good guide, however you will not get a 1 ohm/12K ohm cdi coil these days. This was popular on many 1970s bikes with CDi. The popular replacement is a 0.6R/6K.
I design and build ignition modules and have thoroughly tested out many combinations of coil and igition over the...
There seems to be a lot of discussion on this forum about the best wiring loom for your special build.
I decided I should post the universal wiring diagram we use all the time. The title suggests its for cafe racers but in practise it suits all motorcycles :)
Happy Christmas!
Theres plenty of funny charging systems out there. These CG/mopeds things often run a split AC/DC system IE regulated AC is fed to the headlamps and regulated 12 volts DC to the battery for the stop lights, horn and indicators. The CG Brazil models run this system along with the Yamaha Roller...
Resistor every time.
People worry about 'power loss' because of the resistor. What drivel. Get a Fluke meter and measure the resistance of a spark plug between the centre electrode and the threaded part. So what is the resistance of the air gap? Several million ohms, at least.
A 5,000 ohm...
Dyna stuff is utter rubbish. I get phone calls from the guys drag racing Suzukis all the time with burnt out ignition boxes/coils, can I rebuild the box or get new coils. There are other systems out there for these bikes, none give the problems dyna does.
I'd say of all the parts we get sent...
The capacitor should work fine. Its likely that the regulator has failed out of pure malice.
Seroiusly we do see a number of problems after fitting a battery eliminator and whats been happening is the battery has been masking the fault.
A battery will soak up more power from an over charging...
If its a true Cdi and not transistor ignition it'll look more like the one here:

Oh when will people wake up to the fact that dyna coils are rubbish! I must have thrown out a quarter of a ton of failed dyna rubbish over the last 2 years compared to a shoe box of OEM coils that have failed. We have a testing shop for electrical parts so we get sent a lot of ignition systems...
Its a Yamaha SR500, one of the bikes we specialise in. I've just bought a SRX600 in boxes as I thought an 80's single was needed to compliment my 70s thumper!
That one in the picture was a customer's bike we did
We do a 'stripped down loom' diagram for the Sr500 free to down load from our website:
