72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Sold)

Re: 72 CL100 project (newbie)

Yup. What he said. You should replace the chain anyway. just cut the fucker off, put it in neutral and yank it out.

Re: 72 CL100 project (newbie)

Good news. Had a master link. Being a bike (bicycle) guy, can't believe I didn't look for that sooner. Glad I didn't have to cut the chain, cause it looks to be in good shape.

Next step, pulling that motor off and getting it torn down.

Re: 72 CL100 project (newbie)

Bored at work today... made myself a little sign to hang in my garage.

Oh and I'll be pulling the motor tonight, and working on those bolts some more. Will post pics.

Re: 72 CL100 project (newbie)

Cool sign - what do you do for a living?

And about the chain - if you get new sprockets (you probably should / will anyway), I suggest getting a brand new chain. What is it, a 420 chain? They are pretty cheap.

Re: 72 CL100 project (newbie)

My dad and I own a sign shop. So we do vinyl lettering and all that fun stuff.

Yeah I guess I will consider a new chain if I need to. All the ones I saw online were super expensive. That's why I was thinking I'd just reuse it.

Progress...

Finally got the motor out. Those stripped cover bolts were a pain in me arse. But we won.

Here's the motor right after pulling, and sitting on my work bench.

Ran into a little problem here. Can't get that long bolt out for the life of me. Thinking I'll just cut it off and replace it. Opinions??

Not much left. Front end and kick stand bolt dilemma. Than will start stripping frame for paint.

Re: 72 CL100 project (newbie)

If you cut it, the part thats stuck, will still be stuck. Get a pipe, and hammer it out from the other side.

Tried, couldn't get it to budge.

its probably binding up, try the pipe idea, but move the centerstand around. sounds like its stuck in the centerstand tube, which is seperate from the frame. i hope that makes sense, i think i just confused myself. haha

Re: 72 CL100 project (newbie)

No that makes sense, and you are right, it is stuck right inside the center stand tube, not the frame.

Problem with trying to pound it out is that since it's not in the frame any more on that side it's really hard to keep it lined up with the pipe as you are hitting it.

If I cut it all I would have to replace is the bolt.

yeah.... that sounds like a bugger. i actually left my centerstand off when i put it back together. it was bent up pretty good anyway...

Yeah that crossed my mind as well. In that case, I would just have to find a new way to mount my brake pedal.

Re: 72 CL100 project (newbie)

Those would work just fine. Anything for 7/8 bars will probobly work. Search universal clutch and brake perches. You can find cool shorty ones for dirtbikes.

Or just fuck it all together. and if your really concerned, drag your rear brake a little when using the front. I only run a brake sensor on the back. On every bike I build.

That's probably what I will do. I am not too worried about it.

Re: 72 CL100 project (newbie)

Finally (thanks to finals being over) started cleaning up some parts last night.

Started with SOS pads and it definitely helped, but still not super stoked on how they came out. May end up painting the hubs and spokes black and leaving the rims chrome.

I also need to get some heavy duty degreaser to attack the rear wheel and the engine.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

And for the CL... The seat pan should be pretty simple. Might have to arch it a little bit because of the fender, but not much.

Who knows, I may still end up going the fiber glass route, just figured I'd give this a shot since I had the metal laying around.
