72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Sold)

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Looks a lot like my CL125. Fun bikes and parts are cheap! I did a full rebuild.

Yeah it does! Yours is looking good. I like the look even with the stock and tank and that seat. Fun little bike.

I am getting ready to tear the motor apart but I am going to enlist the help of my grandfather-in-law. All the stupid Philips bolts are stripped so I am going to need the help of his impact driver to get it open.

Than I am going to replace all the gaskets, hope that everything else looks okay, and put it back together with a allen bolt kit.

How hard was breaking your motor down? I have to split it completely in half because I think the gasket that is leaking the oil is the big one right down the middle. Plus I have the whole gasket kit so I might as well do them all.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Breaking the motor down is pretty easy. To get the phillips screws out an impact driver is a must. If they still strip out usualy you can drill the head off and then once the rest of the screws are out and the cover is off the rest of the bolt will thread out by hand. As far as allen heads go i just went to a place online that sold ss bolts and ordered the ones i needed. It was cheaper then any kit. While you have it apart throw in a new piston and rings. They are so cheap its a shame not to while you have it apart. Good luck.

Good advice. Where did you get your replacement piston and ring? Online?

Exactly, how can you beet those prices. You might even find a big bore kit for it. Not sure how crazy you want to get with it.

Ya I had no idea they would be that cheap. I may look into the big bore. If it's cheap enough and easy it would be worth it.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

You may not even have to do the big bore. I bought a piston kit for $70. But the 100 and the later 125 were the same i think. Just different cylinder and maybe head. You could always pick up a head and cylinder and piston off a 125 and drop that on. Thats a decent jump in cc's. Im not totally sure on that but it could be a very viable option..

Hi,

The early 100's like yours and mine have a 14mm piston pin. If you want to go big bore you have 2 choices, pay megabucks for a powroll kit or use the 125 cylinder etc, but you also have to change the crankshaft to a 125 crank.

Aslo when you search on ebay for gaskets pistons etc, the Thailand sites are by far the cheapest option.

Good to know, I'm not too worried about getting max performance out of it. Would rather just do the piston and ring.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Spent a lot of time in the garage today.

first off, Christmas for the CL

Started breaking into the engine with the help of a impact driver and reached the limit of my abilities. Going to need to call on the assistance of a more mechanically inclined friend or family member.

Here's how far I got:
First cover off.

My book will walk me through removing every part step by step, I just ran out of patience today. Might try again Tuesday night. REALLY need to get those new gaskets in.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

This is my first time tearing into a engine so all input is appreciated. My goal is to replace the gasket down the center of the engine. Looks like I need to take everything off to break it in half. Alternator, clutch, etc...

Right??

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Yes and you need a few special tools to do it.
First tool is a special socket that takes the bolt off the oil pump.

The other is a flywheel puller. You can either buy a flywheel puller or i just bought a 14mm X 1.50 bolt and it worked just fine. You just thread it in until the flywheel pops off.

[/size]Thats the two parts that were the hardest to figure out and the rest is real easy.

So I was looking through your post and it looks like the photo of your engine split is from the alternator side. Forgive me if this is a stupid question but if you are taking the case off via that side, why do you have to take the oil pump and clutch a part?

And I made a little more progress last night...

You are correct. I took everything apart to clean and learn. Be sure you open up the oil pump. I have heard that these motors will run forever but that they have an issues getting oil to the cam sometimes.
Here is a link to my photobucket. it has a few more pics if that helps you any.

Okay cool thanks. That's what I was hoping as I'd rather not take the clutch apart if I don't HAVE to. Already feeling a bit overwhelmed as it is. Sure am glad I am tearing into a single cylinder my first time though instead of a 2 or 4.

So open up the oil pump and just clean it up?

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Got your txt yesterday... I dont have a puller... not a honda one anyway. I know they are only like 12 bucks though

Right on. Might give the 14mm X 1.50 bolt a shot first.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Alright guys. I need HELP.

I got the alternator off, but am not sure what else I NEED to take off to split this engine. I have posted some pics of where I am at. The clutch and oil filter and everything are still on the other side. I don't have the right tool I need to take the oil filter off.

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

as long as you have all the bolts out around the outside it should split. Mine took a little convincing. If you take the piston off, You can use a rubber mallet or a block of wood and a hammer to hit the case apart where the piston is. You could try a little heat. I used a screw driver, big no no, and pried it apart gently. But you could damage your cases that way. It worked ok for me.
