72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Sold)

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

If it's anything like a 175 or 350, you need to get the oil filter off.

as long as you have all the bolts out around the outside it should split. Mine took a little convincing. If you take the piston off, You can use a rubber mallet or a block of wood and a hammer to hit the case apart where the piston is. You could try a little heat. I used a screw driver, big no no, and pried it apart gently. But you could damage your cases that way. It worked ok for me.

Alright... I'll give it a shot tonight or tomorrow night. Thanks for the advice. I really just didn't want to break anything, so I didn't try very hard.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

FINALLY got it split.

Now... What should I use to get all the remnants of the old gasket off without damaging the case?

I got the majority of the gasket off, just not ALL of it.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Razor blades are not the best idea on the aluminum case. They gouge easy. What i did was bought some gasket remover. Soaked it in that and then used a razor blade (very carefully) to scrape the chunks off. After you use the gasket remover you dont have to scrape hard so you are less llikly to chunk your case. After i used some 800 or 1000 grit on a 2x4 block and sanded the surfaces smooth so they looked brand new and were flat.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Was ready to put the case back together when my new gasket snapped in half. Lol. Turns out they aren't too new. The previous owner gave them to me, so who knows how long they were sitting in his garage.

Time to order another one. Just gives me more time to scrape and clean the old gaskets off.

Im glad there was some one on here that documented the tear down of a Honda 100 motor. I'm going to have to do this same thing this spring, but the motor is the last thing on my list (funds). What are you plan on doing for pegs? I was thinking about trying to make the rear pegs work some how but theta are on the swing arm, so...

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Cool man. It's really a pretty simple motor. Since it was my first tear down I asked a lot of questions.

I am building this bike for my wife and she is pretty short so I am not planning on doing rear sets. At least not for now.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

I need to order new circlips for the CL100 and all I can find on eBay are clips for a Honda XR100. Will these work?

I am assuming they will since both engines are 100cc and both are Honda but want to make sure.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

I would check the parts diagrams and see if the forks are the same part number or if the triple tree is the same part number. I would assue they are the same as well.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Guess I wasn't reading very well. you could still checkbthe parts fiche for the circlip #. I just went to my local dealer and picked them up.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Yeah I have a call into my local Honda dealer. Haven't heard back yet.

That wont work. Cl100 has 14mm piston pin and the xr100 has 15mm piston pin,

Ya I called my local Honda place and they have what I need for 50 cents each. Breaking the bank for sure ;-)

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Getting ready to make some progress here finally. Gasket kit and bolt kit are here and parts came back from powder so I can start putting the engine back together. Grandpa's friend does powder for me for free. Nice connection :)

And of course my parents pug posing for the shot.

Re: 72 CL100 Mini-Cafe (Project #1)

Finally putting some time in on this bike. Since my other project is almost done.

Putting the front end back together and painted the fork lowers. I know I should have powdered them, but honestly, my wife is NOT picky, and this bike will probably be sold sooner than later.

Sorry no pics cause it's dark out.

Question... how the hell do you get swing arm bushings out? Just pound the shit out of them or what?

The paint is in pretty good shape and I'm not going "all out" on this build so I will probably just leave the stock paint.
