CB550 Bobber-Junkyard Dog

It ran last night but I’ve got fuel pouring out around a couple of carb bowls. Gotta figure that out. Gotta get some brake fluid in the front since I replaced the brake line.

Well the float bowl o-rings must have expanded because they quit leaking. Now I’ve got fuel pouring out one of the over slow drains. I did manage to take it for a couple of short rides down the street and back.

Well she managed a 30 mile shake down ride from Mr. Es house to The Meltdown vintage show. If it makes it back to his house I’ll call it a successful day.

No, the damn thing was leaking the whole time. I’ll have to pull that one down and figure out why.

My battery was also dead by the time I got to the show. Luckily it kick starts pretty easily. I’ve always had a problem with that engine charging but it was never that bad so I’ve got an electrical issue to work out as well.

I wish I had taken more pictures at The Meltdown but I never seem to think about taking photos. It was a complete blast to finally get to ride this little thing. It doesn't beat me like I thought a rigid would, I think between the sprung seat and the flex in the frame it absorbs the bumps better than you might think. It did fine going over the mountain but I didn't try pushing it in the curves since it was only the second time I'd ridden it. I've got a few issues to work out but it didn't leave me on the side of the road so I'm pretty pleased. For now I want to make it more reliable and clean up the appearance just a bit but then put some miles on it over the summer. Maybe next winter I will strip it down again for true cosmetic updates.

Issues:
#2 carburetor has fuel flowing out of the overflow tube at all times
Charging system must not be since the battery was flat by the time I got to the show
Front brake feels soft, probably need to bleed it some more
Rear drum feels even more anemic than normal
 
One of these days, I intend to make the Meltdown.

Just from the one pics, looked like a nice showing.

And sitting next to irk's bike too......cool.

I've got a little SL350 frame I'm considering doing a rigid frame job to.

Don't know how to weld, and don't have the time nor money to git-er-done at the moment.

One of these days.......

Hope you get that carb, and other issues figured, looks like it needs mo miles, mo miles....
 
I've GOT to do the Meltdown - at least once! I believe a lot of the Time Warp Vintage Motorcycle Club group went. On that overflowing carb - pull the bowl and make damn sure the overflow tube itself isn't leaking - a common and sneeky problem.

I will do that. I went a tinkered for a few minutes one evening this week. This time the carb wasn’t overflowing. I even ran down the street and back and it didn’t overflow.

Checked the charging system and it’s putting good voltage to the battery. Shut the bike off and the battery has a good charge. Hit the start switch and it fires right up. Maybe my solenoid was acting up?

Motorcycle helper elves snuck in the garage and fixed things?

I’ll have to look into it more. Gotta get this thing legal so I can scoot a few miles on it.

That all sounds like great news.

I had some weird overflow issues w the 400F.

The more I rode the better it got. Now, none leak a drop.
 
When the leak goes away it was usually a sticky float and they can settle in and stop sticking after a few rides.

Sticking float was kind of my suspicion the whole time but I thought it might be something else when it didn’t stop while I was riding. I’ll have to cruise a little and see how it does.
