If one of these kids pursues fabrication beyond their first bike then all the sacrifice is worth it!! N most 70's n 80's bikes handled like shit anyway. I understand half of the gripes bout the people just doing it for the trend, but it has inspired a lot of people to be better craftsman n learn new skills also. If you prefer a stock bike then that's your business n the same to someone who doesn't. Constructive criticism is not calling someone a fucking idiot!!! I understand a lot of these old grouchy fuckers are set n their ways n it pisses em off when you don't listen to em!! Personally, I say fuck em!! IMO, they are slowing down progression of the younger generation, n that's why they don't want to listen to the advice given to them. How do you expect some young guy to learn to work with his hands if you tell him not too!! I also agree with a earlier point bout these bikes would end up in junkyards if there wasn't a revised interest, n at the end of the dat the ones that don't make it become available parts for the us.

yeah but:

often people with experience building and racing these old bikes hear this:

"can someone give me some advice on modifying my frame, I want to build a cafe racer, so I need to cut off the rear part of the frame the shocks mount to, so I'm going to remount them to that bar that goes from where they were to the swingarm bolt, I have a harborfreight welder so I'm good in that department, but I'm looking for pointers"

and respond as such:
"that wouldn't be a good idea, changing the shock geometry changes the effective spring rate and damping rate, that and remounting the shock ends to the middle of a tube without changing a whole lot of other things would probably result in a buckling tube and crashing"

then hear this:

"well I'm not planning on riding it very hard, so I don't think it will be an issue, it's just an around town bomber anyway"

can you see how the elders would be frustrated by this and get grouchy about people asking for and then ignoring their advice? Hell I'm surprised PJ hasn't had an aneurysm yet

It's not the ones that utilize the advice of the more experienced, it's the ones that ignore
it that pisses off us old fuckers. Those are the 'hipsters', the modern day version of the 'poser'
from the "80s.

pos·er1
ˈpōzər/
noun
1.
a person who acts in an affected manner in order to impress others.
synonyms: exhibitionist, poseur, posturer, fake

They were probably called something else before that. And will be something else in the future.

no , it's more like. I want to rebuild my subframe, anyone have any advice? You fucking dumbass!! Don't you know you gonna build a peice of shit that 'll kill your stupid ass! That's what I'm talking about. It's one thing to explain the situation as you put it and another to be an asshole.

Do whatever the hell ya want. If you're real concerned about saving all the classics, then buy them up and stick them in your warehouse to rust away.

As was stated... They made a pile of these damn bikes. There are likely dozens of the models people lust after in museums and private collections world-wide for folks to go stare at. Fucking terrific.

And as has also been stated, there's a difference between cutting a bike up with a functional and useful end result and cutting one up for the fuck of it.

If someone is doing the latter, and someone who knows better offers advice to the contrary, then that that kicks ass. That's the whole point of this place. If that person hears the advice and chooses to ignore it, whatever. Fuck it. Can't teach a pig to sing... Blah blah blah.

The thing that pisses me off as of late (rant starting now... walk away if you'd like) is the "old guy" or the "guy with experience" who feels that the fact that they're older or more experienced gives them the right to be an asshole. It doesn't. Get the fuck over yourself. Please.

There are a ton of "older guys" here who KNOW their shit and are happy to help without being assholes. Let them help and keep your snide bullshit to yourself. Many of the good ones have chimed in here. They've done so with some tact and respect. Fucking learn from that.

The ones who insist on being assholes... You're the reason kids dont learn. They ask for help and your first response is to call them fucking names and belittle them while offering NO real help. Why the hell would they listen?

Eh... Fuck it.

Having a bad day are we? And just as I was about to complement you on your polite spell check. Let's all take a deep breath and let it out slowly. People have different opinions and it's all good. It's better if we are respectful but it's hard on the internet to tell humor from sarcastic douchebaggery ( I want to see that as the word of the year for 2014).

This is not real life - it's far more important than that. - If only I could remember what movie that came from.

Now back to the garage I have a stock restoration to finish so I can get to chopping up the frame from an identical bike to make a bad ass cafe racer out of it. :)

I'll be damned, if I have not seen several cases of guys posting pics of a cherry old bike to get recommendations on whether to make it a cafe-bobber-etc.
And get several posts to keep it original, because it is a great bike in stock or mildly improved form. They are also told to buy a rough bike if they want to learn how to modify bikes. ;)
BUT a lot of bikes were mediocre when they were new, and no one with any sense cares who cuts one up. ::)

Perhaps this is the website you should be on: http://www.vjmc.org/

If me/you/us lot stopped chopping bikes up where would the big buck bike designers go for inspiration ::)
