You will have parts in the mail tommorrow!! :D

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Marc, you rock brother! I owe you two now!

And Diesel, honestly, it didn't smell at all. I had thoroughly cleaned, degreased, and wiped down with denatured alcohol prior to painting too though, so there was no grease to cook off. It actually had no notable smell or smoke. It's not near what I thought it would be! I was expecting this ::):

i have been lookign for that clear on ebay like crazy i need to find that link!
.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks Joe!

Took a little time, but it was worth it. Some tape and an exacto. Well worth the effort.

I dunno what's up with the clear on Ebay, I should have known that it was something special when I found it. I just googled and hit the shopping link on the top and it showed the cans I bought. Now I'm not seeing them either. Shine Gear carries them but they're full price. I'm gonna keep looking though, they're bound to pop up again. Maybe this is a guy that gets overstock from somewhere or something. The clear looks so great on Troy's build though, I had to get it!

This is the cheapest place (plus shipping) to get it online:

Appreciate the props fellas.

Oh and by the way, I'm assembling the motor now. Maybe some pics in a bit...we'll see how I hold up. I was surprised to find my gasket kit on the doorstep today after ordering it only Friday! I love when that happens!!!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

gifts on the door step are always cool! It's like instant motivation. Can't wait to see that motor back together bud. No, I take that back. Can't wait to hear that motor ripping down the street!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Nice work on the engine man! Can't wait to see the finish bike.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Alrighty! Been at it since 9:00 this morning on the bike. Lots done. So much that it gave me a headache.

It was going to be motor day. I went to put the jugs back on the bottom half of the motor, and one of the piston rings snapped. It was probably old and brittle, so I'm glad it happened now and not going down the road! I halted that process and ordered some new rings and will finish that up when the time comes.

So on to the next project I went. I decided it was time to button up the frame, so I took the entire bike back apart and welded every seam and ground them down smooth. I relocated the left pedal mount up 1/2 inch because they were unedven and it bugged me. Then I went and bought a sandblaster to blast the frame.....and my compressor crapped out. I think the motor burnt up in it. It's all good though because I needed an excuse to go and buy that 45 gallon I've been eyeballing from my buddy! 8)

So determined as I was to sling paint, I took to the frame with a wire wheel. And this took forever and sucked a lot, but it got the job done and worked well. I managed to take the frame to my buddy's shop and use his compressor just long enough to blast the crevices that I couldn't get to with the grinder.

I wiped everything down with acetone and then proceeded to warm the crevices with a torch to burn off any remaining oils. Then came two coats of etching primer....dry. And then for my color choice. I was going to do powder on the frame, but this paint caught my eye, snd I'm glad I used it. I think it looks sick. It's called dark bronze. I think it turned out well. It's a textured paint too so it gives some definition to things. I'm very happy with it.

The battery came in today also, and it fits perfectly under the bum stop. So all in all, the day was productive, but now I'm beat!!!!

Lemme know what you think guys!!!

The wire brushed frame. Pain in the ass!!!!!

On to the etching primer with a dangling from the ceiling paint set up ::) :

A good day it was. Now I'm going to watch Sons of Anarchy and eat a pizza! The good life boys and girls. That's what it's all about.

Hope you like what's going on with this ol' girl....she's starting to shape up now!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I broke 2 rings on mine! chalk it up to a 30+ year old bike!

Hey Bud that hammered frame looks sick. Nice choice on color too. Can't wait to see that engine sitting in that thing! Guess since the engine (that sucks) is on hold you'll be painting the tins???

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks for the compliments brothas!

I think you're right BC. these things just get brittle after being exposed to that heat for so long.

Seb, you're right, it was crazy busy, but I realized that with several days like that, I can actually finish this thing this decade!

And Troy, you guessed it bro. I've got the skins here at the house (where my homemade booth is), and the first coat of glazing compound just went on the fenders. I finally decided on a color scheme, and that's what ultimately pushed me toward the frame color I chose. It will be an antique white base with accents done in a tan/bronze "bowling ball" accent stripe of some sort. If you guys don't know what bowling ball paint is, it looks like this:

cd-7004_brilliant_dye_red_over_marble_over_gc-6011_black_ground_coat.jpg

The striping on the tank will have a black base coat with a bronze marble overlay. That's what's in my head anyway. The seat and grips will be brown to match. Give it that old school flavor.

What do you guys think?

Appreciate the love as always!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

ooh... white and tan bowling ball effect on tank and seat?
i think it'll look awesome, but i worry it may turn out looking a bit gimmicky.
what finish are you planning for the rims? maybe a tan powder/paint will bring them up to the frame and bring it all together...

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah, it may be a little over the top. The wheels are already powdered black (gloss rims with satin high head hubs and buchanan's stainless steel spokes). So maybe just a tan or bronze stripe without the bowling ball with black pinstriping to outline the stripe and pull it all in. The antique white is definitely the base, I think that color is calling this build. The stripe, I love the idea of a brownish color just because it is vintage and it will pull the brown upholstry and such in....Thanks for the input. I really would like to know what you guys think, your input is appreciated...this is something that a consensus helps me to see perspective.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I love the colors. I think they are the right choice hands down. Bowling ball I don't have the imagination to see it. It could be the bomb and could kick ass but I don't know for sure. Its a gutsy move and it could send it over the top or sink it. Tough call. I know I'm no help. I'd love to see it in photoshop.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

the hive-mind is extremely good at offering different perspectives :)
i think stripes will look the bidness. in fact, white base with stripes reminds me of lachbeth1125's KH100 build

only issue with that is that the brown should be pretty similar in hue to the coating you've got the frame in, otherwise it's a 3 colour bike with polished bits, and black tyres

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah I'm with you. The colors are right for sure. I'm with you on the bowling ball though. It may just be that it makes it not vintage enough. I want to retain the vintage feel, so that might be what kills it. I'm gonna do some test swatches though to see what it might look like.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah, I'm having the same issue. It sounds cool but I can't picture it. I say rock it. At least you'll know which bike is yours. I agree with the vintage edge, and I know you can pull it off.

Might as well just dive in.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

And yes, seb, the color will be almost exactly what the frame color is, only without the texture. I have the swatch already, I just have to get some mixed up at the store.

What I'm thinking for the stripe is something that starts a the front on the side of the tank and then carries up to the top and flows down the tank as a stripe. I don't know if that makes sense, I'll just have to draw it out and show you.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yep, you're right Crescent!

I just don't want to have to re-sand the skins 800 times, so I'll try the scheme out on some scrap first and see what I like the best!
