I LOVE THAT MONO SHOCK!!!! killer man! just great work all around!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey kit thanks for the tips man. I am like you, learning the old school pinstriping trade a little bit at a time. I'm just not good enough yet to feel comfortable striping a tank by hand and having it turn out right. I thought about taping and painting them on but stacking paint like that makes me nervous. So I opted for the 3m stripes. Now that I have a good 3 base coats of clear on, I will probably wet sand at 1500 and do another 3 at least. I like it to look wet, ya know? And chris' tank looks incredible. Nice work bro. I think loudbike is modelling for gretta's exhaust. I appreciate you loaning her to chris for that man!

Joe, I appreciate the props man! I dig it too. It's different, I looks cool as hell, and I just like it! Turned out great IMO. 8)

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

i believe we need a picture with the tank resting on the frame and tail section together

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

You'll get one tomorrow force. The clear was still wet last night in the booth or I woulda got one for ya. But it's coming!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Damn that girl is looking sweet. 6 coats of clear should definitely give her that constant fresh out of the shower look. Damn Sexy!

...yeah I've been coming in late every night after working on her. I guess I get in the zone and the world disappears!

I know what your saying, and your work reflects that zone. Keep up that pace and this build will flow right past any obstacles. Great work man, cant wait to hear Gretta rumble.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks for the motivation crescent. You guys keep those words coming and she'll be don't in no time. Thanks for the kind words bro

whoa, I gotta stop you there... I think you're asking for major adhesion issues if you're painting on a wetsanded 1500grit surface. Without knowing too much about your paint I don't want to give you the wrong advice, but with the stuff I use (PPG DBC) 600 is just the right tooth. I've prepped things with higher grits and had the paint later pull or roll off. Shoot a test piece with your clear coat (or just use the underside of your tank) sand that down with 600 and clear over the top of that, if you can't see the scratches use 600. If you can then obviously you have to go to a higher grit... but everything I've ever experienced would make me avoid that.

Yeah layering the stuff gets scary sometimes, the stripes should work out great and 6 coats should be plenty to bury them. Suzuki would do that same thing in the 80s.

Yup Loud's over there right now working for you :) after which, she'll be hibernating for winter here at work in the front lobby. Clears up a little space in the garage.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Kit has really good advice, which is why I trust him to paint my stuff.

As for the exhaust pics, see below. Right now it is just tacked into position. Kiley and I are working through some of the mounting options because his bike has so many modifications. The blue tape on Loudbike is where the axle line on Kiley's bike. I wanted to make sure the exhaust stopped at that point. I'm a little anxious because my gut tells me the system will look better stopping at the seat line, but then again, I would have never thought this project would turn out as cool as it has.

In looking at the pic, I'm going to explore pinching the cones in a bit toward the tire. It may not be possible, but I'm going to look into it. Then again, it might give the bike a bit more width since stretching it out narrowed the aesthetics quite a bit.

And thanks to Kit for allowing me to borrow his bike for so long. I'm going to build a couple sets of different pipes off it before I give it back :)

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey kit thanks for the advise man, and you're right. I totally mistyped that whole thing...the 1500-2000 is what I use for final sand, but the 600 is good advice, ive been using 400 in the past and I have had issues with being able to see scratches under the paint. I'll try 600 with this one. The plan is to pu another 3 coats on tomorrow, so I'll wet sand with 600 prior to doing that for adhesion. Thanks for that info. I knew that the stripes could be painted over, I've even seen Harley do it before. But for anyone planning to do this, don't use cheap pin stripes, the adhesive will get destroyed under a 2k clear. I suspect that the hardener gets to it. 3M makes a great stripe. It worked like a charm.

Chris, thanks for the pics bro. I actually came up with a solution I think for the cone mounting, I'll shoot it over for you. As far as the length, follow your gut. I kind of thought the same thing upon initial envisioning. I leave that in your very capable hands to determine the aesthetics of this sucker. You have shown me how passionately you feel about this stuff in working with you, and I've come to trust your decisions on matters like that. Sometimes the art is best left to the artist s to speak. I know it will turn out great. I appreciate both of you guys' input greatly.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I think as is it will look much better on the stretched bike, but I think it will look even better if it ends at or just after the seat. The horizontal portion is just too long I think.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Okay first, I have an update, I will post it in a second. Here is something that got done with the mad photoshop skills of my buddy CafePete on the boards because he is a ROCKSTAR!

Actually, this helped Chris and I come to the conclusion that it needs to be short. It looks so sick that way. We shot these pics back and forth on the iPhone today and made some measurements to make it happen.

CafePete, thanks buddy, you are one badass dude!

Gald to help on this great build. :)

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

And now the update!

I played in the shop all day today and got a bunch of stuff done. The tank and fenders are now finished. I added another 3 coats of clear to all of them at about 10 AM. About 15 minutes ago, the tank was cured enough to move out of the booth so I took some teaser shots. Images proper will come tomorrow, but this should get you droolin! It looks amazing IMO, and it just made the bike.

I put on my new chain today after spending like $100 at Tractor Supply on chain breakers, tensioners, and staggered master links, but dammit, it's done! And it wouldn've been more than that if Troybilt hadn't hooked me up with some new chain. You rock brother!

No clearance issues at all. It is tight, but she fits. I love it when measurements work! The rear wheel is true as well. So +1 for handmade swing arms guys! Take your time and it will rock.

My Duc Monster shock came in when I got home a second ago, so that will go on tomorrow. I also got these in:

And bought a shit ton of wires and waterproof connectors. So guess what is next on the plate!

So anyway, enough of my rambing. Here are some pics. hope you dig it!

Installed chain:

Don't worry, the 8" of excess stripe is now trimmed. Literally 8", but I wasn't taking chances!
