Haha! I'm working as hard as I can brother! I'm thinking one month tops. Still got a lot of nitpicky stuff to do. And I have to wait for the exhaust. But it won't be long. She'll be on the road by Christmas for sure.

And Boom, I am going to run the main wire to the block, and then one for the ignition switch which will be main power to the coils. Then the headlights will have another just because I am going to install an HID kit. then there are two spare just in case of some upgrade I may do down the road. You really only need one from the battery to the coils. When you get ready to do your wiring, PM me an e-mail addy, and I will send over a barebones wiring diagram. It eliminates a bunch of the useless crap.

Thanks for the props brothas!

Ive got a diagram that I bought off that guy on ebay for $5. JRK based his off the same one and his bike is doing just fine. So between what Ive got and what youll send in pm, I should be all set :) Ill hit you up when I get there.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey, I just checked out my wiring diagram and it looks like you were right about the neutral light. Looks like there is a neutral switch behind the sprocket cover (your neutral light wire is LG/R). Here is a visual, hope it helps.

I love this bike and cannot wait til' you're done, I gotta see this thing in action! Lookin' forward to your next project!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Man, thank you so much Berner! I thought that's where the gear position sensor was, but I wasn't sure. You rock man! And the next project will be fun....a totally different direction for sure!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

As always great work! Glad to see that Gretta is almost complete.
Then I started thinking after gretta where am I doing to get my
daily Kanticoy Garage fix! Looks like it going to be in the bob section. ;D
I'll be tuning in.

Love the tappet covers, can I ask where you picked them up.
Thanks

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Anks as always Pete! I'm glad I've kept you tuned in! And yep new project as soon as gretta is done...does this mean I'm addicted?

And sure brother, I got the tappet covers from here:

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Really nice work Kiley. Love those tappet covers. Nice find! May have to steal those if you don't mind. I never did replace mine.
Everything looking good. That dash should be pretty cool.
Congrats on the new bike. The hardtail will get a heart afterall;D Will be fun to watch.

Hey bud you need a shop manual! Its a little late now but I'll send you the link.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey guys, sorry no updates yesterday and today. I got lots done yesterday...wiring is done. I'll post pics in the morning, I'm stuck at work all night.

Docta, I'm gonna do some with and without shots of the badges tomorrow and get you guys' opinions. It's still up in the wind.

Troy, thanks as always brother!

I'm still waiting on my headlight bucket, and because of that I'm stuck wiring wise. I have to take off the front wheel for the umpteenth time to adjust the brake linkage. It's just super tight right now. The front brake arm has some teeth that are adjustable to allow more play, and I need about 1/2" of slack to free things up there. Also I have to crack the sprocket cover again to re-attach that wire there.

I also have to get the shift linkage worked out. Last but not least, upholstry pan for the seat and then upholstry on that. Still debating on brown grips with a brown seat....what do you guys think?

Ahhh the piddly stuff. Gotta love the tedium!

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

my vote. that is if i get a vote. is for no phenix.
they are just to big and heavy on a bike that is so clean.
if one of them was drilled to use for a brake light and was centrally located then it may be ok but on the sides of the tank i thinking they look to heavy. i wasn't gonna say anything but it is " up in the air"
they are cool maybe later you will find something you can work them into.
i am on the road now its your turn. lets start setting up the DTT meet at Deals gap for springtime 2010

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Okay, back to some build updates!

I got the wiring done save the headlight and running light on the tail and tag lights. Coils in, switches in, LEDs installed and wired, rear brake light switch done. Tail light wires ran, Reg Rec wired in, plug wires installed, battery wired, neutral indicator finished along with headlight switch being wired.

Needless to say my hands are skinned and burned front twisting wires and solder and heat shrink...oh my!

The good news is, it is done right. every connection soldered and heat shrink. Every connector done with sealed connections. All wires cut to fit exactly, and I am quite confident in this wiring. It is no frills, no excess, bare minimum and clean. It's crazy how long it takes though!!!!

So now we come to the badges. I just don't think they look right on here. It definitely needs something, I just don't know what. I have spent hours looking for the right emblem with no avail. I thought about decals, but I really like the 3d emblems. Help me fellas, find me some cool shit!

Tomorrow I have to re adjust the front brake which should be fairly easy. And then the upholstery starts.

I broke down and bought a set of Mikuni VM32 round slides; Dot a new throttle lever and cable along with pods too. I'm sure you've all seen the ebay special. I looked for CRs everywhere. Cyclex wanted $500 just for the carbs. Too much. The used ones are just that...used. Not that I'm scared of that, but by the time I got them jetted and bought cables to fit etc. etc., I would have way mucho moolah in them, and with the Mikunis, I get ti all in one package, pre-jetted with everything I need for less than $400 dollars. So the fuel issue will have to come next. New filters and lines. I have a weird issue going on with the petcock on the Duc tank. They both appear to be left hand side petcocks. When the right one is installed with the fuel lever toward the outside of the bike, the fuel nipple points forward. I don't know exactly how to source the correct one, because I don't know exactly what they used here. It almost looks as if it is threaded with 3/8 NPT. I'll have to search around for it since it isn't a stock part it makes it difficult.

I didn't get enough done today. I made the 2 hour trek and picked up the new project. It is a 1982 HD Sportster Ironhead. Look for the thread start in the Bob and Chop section.

But anyway, on to the pics!

In progress wiring:

Recessed bolt heads on the seat mounts for the rec/reg mounting plate. This way the seat still sits flush:

The new dash. I found an old aluminum fan blade in dads scrap pile that is right around 1/16 plate and cut it out of the blade. It looks much better than the lexan.

before: Lexan:

After: Aluminum

The "bike on" indicator...proves the wiring works! comes on when the key is switched to on. Headlight is on a switch so I can kill it when not in use...this will keep me from killing the teeny battery by leaving the switch on. Also shown are the neutral and high beam indicators:

Rear brake light working from pedal:

Picture015.jpg

I'll get some pics of the brake switch bracket tomorrow.

I have to order a front brake assembly with a built in switchto operate the brake light from there. I want nothing on my bars, and I'm running drum front so I can keep it clean. I'll probably use something off of a dirt bike. The key switch is the kill.

Salem says thanks for watching....he is a good shop dog even though I can't talk him into wiring with me!

Stay tuned for more action, and as always, lemme know your thoughts!!! 8)

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I'm sorry but thy dashboard gas to go.....looks too big and bulky on the bike, kinda defeats the purposenof puttin the gauge in the headlight bucket. Who needs idiot lights anyways? Just put the ignition switch where the down tube meets the neck and keep it clean. Just my $.02 as always though great workmanship

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I kind of like it....but I see what you mean. And the ignition switch can't go there anymore because of how I had to relocate the coils due to their bulk. That's what started the entire dashboard idea in the first place. I needed a place to put the key switch.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hide it up underneith the seat or something, I love this bike but I feel like that dashboards gonna kill it.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I feel ya man. I'll take another look at it tomorrow. The lights are going to stay, but maybe the dash is too bulky. I'm sure I can find something to do with the switch, but as damned picky as Hondas are to get into neutral, I'm running a neutral indicator. And the honda key can come out at any position on the switch, so I don't want to make the mistake of leaving the bike on and killing the battery with the coils staying hot. Also a highbeam indicator is just smart. I've gotten 2 tickets before due to leaving them on on bikes, so I'm not doing that again. But I can definitely see where you're coming from. I'll have to play with it and see what I can come up with.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Nowadays-

Brakelight indicator from front brake activation is smart, really smart.

Neutral light- you can always turn the bike off with the clutch in, then check for neutral when she cools on restart (easier on the old Hondas) by rolling back and forth. Neutral light is nice though.

High/low can be determined from switch position, but an indicator is nice for frequent road use.

Been doing this awhile, and besides turn indicators, all the litle lights are nice features for heavy duty road use.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Nice to see Gretta light up Homie. Love the photo of you stepping on the brake. That tail and light just rock! Go together like hand in glove. Remember that when you do the new rectifier that the wiring will be straight out the back (mounted like it is now the terminals will be pointed down). Makes sure you leave a little extra wiring.
Damn bud you are so close. Really nice work. I have to agree with the others about a dash up there. It is ok but my opinion it doesn't fit the rest of the build. I guess just a cosmetic thing really. Thats just my .02
You may consider moving the hi/low indicator and the netural into the headlight bucket? Just a thought.

Hannibal, that is a good point about turning the bike off while in gear with the clutch engauged. That's the way I do it. Intersections can be a little tricky using hand signals but the only time finding netural was ever really a task was when I had my shifter turned grand prix. Just took a little getting used to.

Anyway, what a blast watching all these cool builds come together. Really nice job Kiley.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Lookin good. As for the dash...well I would ditch it and try Something more minimilist. You are running clip ons right? So you have 2 holes where the risers used to be, that is good for 2 lights, then put the high beem in the headight bucket and just use a very small piece of aluminum to mount your key down low on the tree. It would suck to spend all the effort and have the dash just not be right. Just my .02 cents but you are doing so much great work, it needs to finish without any comprimises. Or do a Herm style indicator strip for the lights.

Cheers,

Maritime

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

i like the idea of the neutral switch and high beam switch in the headlight bucket....they would look nice right above the gauge flush mounted as well....if you go to radio shack they have these really nice flush mount lights that would look nice on this build. as for the key....id ditch it all together and just run a toggle switch then....just hide the toggle really well so no one could just jump on the bike and take off, im assuming with how much time and money you have into this build your not gonna be leaving it alone for too long anyways.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll figure something out. I didn't think that the dash was as obtrusive as you guys are interpreting it, but I'll get something going. As far as no key, I've had a bike stolen before so that's not happening. I'll hide it before I ditch it. And I want the indicator lights. I'm the guy riding it, and they are useful to me, but I agree it could be a smaller exhibit. I'll come up with something cool don't worry.

I appreciate you guys givng me an outside perspective...it's a good tunnel vision eliminator. It's really not a big deal to change, so we'll make it cool.

Re: Project Gretta: The evolution of a confused '74 360

why not bore out one of the holes where the handle bars used to bolt to put your ignition switch and then put the flush mount LED's i was talking about for indicators in the headlight bucket? just and idea
