Feeling it a bit more now.

I've switched to my full size spray gun with a larger nozzle [ was using the touch up gun ] as the paint was going on dry. Got a real nice heavy flow coat on with the new gun and I'm feeling happier about the finish.

Still not 100% about the colour combo - we'll see.

Opinions please.

This is the first heavy flow coat ... bear in mind it is a base coat and will require clear lacquer. Two more coats to be applied - the final 2 using top grade thinners.

It is looking close to the idea of an "aluminium" tank / seat, which is what I was looking for rather than a "Silver".

Looks good to me, TJ. If that's the color you had in mind and if, seeing it, it still looks right, then yahoo! If you decide you don't like it or that it isn't what you thought it would be, perhaps white w/ the red stripe the same color as the frame?

Looks fine, but the real test is on the frame so you can see whether the color combo works.

Reds are like that too. Get a color you really, really like and then put that part beside the other parts it has to live with and often it's just wrong.

The two bold colors have to complement each other. You might find that the tank color works well with the shade of red you like but you may find it needs a darker red to work.

Thanx for the feedback RS. White is not my favourite colour for a bike - and certainly not a 60's choice generally.

Teazer, certainly a Maroon would suit the Silver, but I think it might clash with the Post Office Red of the frame.

I've decided to see it through now -as you say I'll offer it up to the frame together with the seat and take a gander. I think with the Red stripes and tank pinstriping, there will be enough to break up the Silver expanse.

The 1/2 fairing is another matter and again will require something to break up the mass of Silver.

As previously stated - it's not a huge area if I decide it's not for me and I respray in another colour ! At least I won't have all that prep to do again.

It's certainly silver.....the texture will change with the clear coats and the light will hit it differently too, so you might end up closer to polished alloy.

Had you considered wrapping it?

I think double red might look a bit wrong...frame one red shade and tank stripe another shade...hmmm?

I've done a test piece on a scrap piece of GRP sheet to get some idea of the finish I could expect as it's difficult to anticipate what effect the clear lacquer might have.

My pal suggested wrapping, but I've gone too far down this path to swap.

Agree re: "two tone" Red - it has to be the same as the frame.

I have another colour in mind if the Silver is not to my liking after the lacquer is applied. One step at a time !!

Black or grey are always good motorcycle colors.

I did go down that path as a "whatif" before the attachment brackets were glassed in ! I went for a Satin Black [ pic on bench ] - the pinstripe tape was just to give a rough idea ............ excuse the Stevie Wonder application !

I hadn't contemplated the stripes at that stage as I was planning on a Manx style hold down strap [ cosmetic ]. I think a Red / Black combo would work.

The Gloss Clear Lacquer and top coat thinners is arriving next week and I'll spray my test piece. I already have Satin Clear lacquer - so I'll try both.

So I got sidetracked with the Boardtracker project for a few weeks, but it's back to the KZ now. The test piece got finished over the weekend .... and I'm now completely undecided ! I think I'll do a larger piece - maybe the seat. Talk about " I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure " ....... I tried the Manx style hold down strap on again - maybe - maybe not.

Has it resally been 7 months since I did anything mesaningful with the KZ ?

What with Covid, my pal Brian's illness and other life squitter - yes, bugger all done.

However, in the meantime I did get sidetracked with my Boardtracker project and a "quickie" [ ??? ] makeover VF400 Flat Tracker.

Time to get back into the Glemseck now.

Next week we're going to look at completing the mock up of the exhaust and with the nice weather around - I'll shoot a final coat of Silver on the tank / seat ready for clear lacquer.

I'd like to procrastinate, but I never get around to it............................

This is the time that the project either gets finished (for now) or sits in the corner for ever. I have had a few projects at that stage of not being able to decide which option to take. Usually the answer lies in asking the question "what is that appeals to me most". The answers are rarely simple but that usually helps me to get to a solution.

Just got my small shed compressor back from loan [ !! ]. NEVER, EVER say "there's no rush" when loaning stuff or waiting for outsource work to be done.

Loaned out beginning of June ........... however we still have decent spraying weather here in the UK, so the tank and seat will get their final top coats.

The exhaust has also had a final mock up and will be tacked in the next few weeks or so.

Teazer, get what you say, but this one has to be finished and time is ebbing away.

Back to the Glemseck now.

The underframe fuel cell had to be abandoned due to the regs I would run under for the Glemseck event. I've just completed a pattern for the new version fuel cell which will sit behind engine and above swingarm.

It will give me 2 galls [ imp ] which will do me for the amount of riding I will be doing. I'm just waiting for the weld bungs to arrive then it's off to Uncle Rob to perform his magic.

We also finalised [ at last !! ] the exhaust run, and again just waiting for delivery - this time for the 63mm to 51mm reducer to attach the shortie silencer to the rear downpipe.

Unfortunately to give us sufficient rom for the fuel cell I have to use the short weber manifold, which in turn makes the NOS impractical. - so that's going on the Virago Boardytracker ! Waste not - want not.
