The 'leftovers' project - XS650

So - while the plan is still for Junior to make up a couple of split tanks, I decided for versatility I'd pick up a larger factory tank for longer distance riding. Was looking for a Triumph tank with the spine down the center, as some of them mount from underneath with 4 bolts, which is my plan for the split tanks. 4 bolts and a fuel line clamp and I'd swap the tanks.

Was perusing eBay and searched for BSA tanks on a lark and found one I fell in love with. Dent free, rust free, minimal pitting in the chrome, cap, petcock in place. So I snapped it up. It's only 3 gallons but should be bigger than the split tanks and just an alternative for fun from time to time. Or it might end up on a shelf in my office till the next project comes along.

Looking good Tim! Those frames are sweet. Going to send in a spare xs neck to voodoo so I can build one like this. 8)

Junior - funny thing - was just looking at the pictures and thought, hmmm... if you cut this tank at those two seams (remove the center chunk) and squashed the sides down, it would be about right :)

The tank is on its way here - will be interesting to see how well it does or does not fit.

Just ordered up some fenders for this thing from Front Street Cycles - frontstcycle.blogspot.ca Craig makes some nice looking fenders, either plain or ribbed. We're doing a set of front and rear ribbed fenders.

4 1/2 inches wide for the rear and 3 1/4 inches for the front both ribbed. Should sit nicely on the 4.00-18 rear and 3.00-21 front AVONs.

Will be selling off the alloy ribbed ducktail 7 Metal West fender I have. Turns out 7 West is up to their eyeballs in back orders and people are getting ansy, so maybe it's a high-demand item.

I wanted steel fenders and a matching set - 7 West doesn't do skinny front fenders and didn't respond to my email from weeks ago, so off the list they go. Thankfully I was put onto Front Street Cycle and Craig has been very responsive. He'll be making a set of bars for this bike too once we nail down a design.

Good call - this thing is going to be the best leftovers you've ever had...

Should have made it more clear that the photo above is not my bike - it's one of Craig's pics from his website. I'm not sure what pipes I'm running yet, but given mine is more of a factory-custom style and not so radical, I won't be running upswept pipes like that :)

Most likely just simple straight pipes with internal baffles.

So - got the tank today. Needless to say, not rust free on the inside as described in the auction. But it is solid - working with the seller on a partial refund so I can buy the necessary POR15 or what have you.

Cool tank! Would look good held on with leather straps, as is.

Can anyone tell me how so many ebay sellers misrepresent their goods and get away with it over and over?

only as many times as you let them . If you think it's hard being an evilbay buyer try being a seller .

One buyer found my packaging to be objectionable and wanted to keep the item and be reimbursed .
I'd packaged it in a local inde paper "The Stranger" and one of the articles was deemed objectionable by the buyer. it took three months to resolve and my 100/100% rating went out the door with the resolution .
So you want to bitch about misrepresented items on evilbay and the seller getting away with it ? Bitch at the seller , I have less than no time for it here .

If you have less than no time for it, why post anything at all! Ha ha! Kidding!

I personally like it when things are packaged in local papers. Very interesting read sometimes. Too bad your buyer was so hypersensitive.

That tank is sweet but it needs to be raisexd a bit to show off the engine a bit more, even 1/2in would make a difference, it doesnt need to lie on the backbone

Sorry guys - been kept busy with major re-orgs at work, and just had 19 new windows installed at the house which continues to be a major project.

Will be back on it shortly. Working on getting the basis for a set of split tanks over to Junior from Voodoo Vintage to match the frame. Took the bike apart to move it out of my home office into the garage. Will shorten the front end, get the front wheel spaced properly and begin putting the beastie together.

Waiting for my fenders and handlebars to arrive from Front St. Cycle as well. Custom ribbed front and rear fenders and some cool 1" bars. Swap meet next weekend where I hope to pick up some old Triumph P clamp 1" risers, and maybe an old universal clamp on kickstand that I will weld to the frame.
