Deacon's CB350

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

I think so, the screen is not going to be too complex a curve so that should work. If not, I'll have to make a vacuum table which is not too hard to make. My only concern at this point with forming the acrylic is finding a cheap enough heating source that will heat the entire sheet evenly. Going to do some testing with that small piece I picked up to get a workable solution.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Headlight arrived today, little 4" number. Was surprised at how small it was since my other ones are 6" and 7". Held it up to the fairing and it looks to be a good size.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

After a week away from the project, I got back at it over lunch. Have the shape 90% done, just need to fine tune the symmetry a bit. Hope to have this finalized in day or two, would really like to have it ready to fibreglass by this coming long weekend.

Pretty damn symmetrical for eyeballing it! Lookin great! Can't wait to see it all glassed up, painted, and bolted down.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

just read this thread...looks great man, I have a 72 350g im restoring

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Thanks guys. I'm getting anxious to fiberglass it but really want to make sure its as close to symmetrical before doing it. Tedious process at times but its getting there.

You got that right, Good job Deek...
Honestly, that is my weakness, making things match right to left. Damned these eyes. Hell I have to flip a 2x4 over and over, to tell if the bend continues to go the same way, it must be straight. ::)

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

I don't find it very easy either, I can get it pretty close with just my eyes and hands but different lighting can throw off what you see so I don't trust it 100%. I've been taking a lot of measurements side-to-side to get it a bit closer. I know the end result won't be perfect but I'll try my best.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

How did I just now find this?!

Deacon she is looking fantastic! I love the fact that everything you make is with simple equipment. It gives guys like me some hope. Well done sir.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Thanks man. Since money is always a factor in my builds I have to be able to do it with simple equipment :) That's what I like about fiberglass, you can do some pretty cool things with it and it can be done fairly cheaply with very minimal tools. Sure you can get into more elaborate setups involving vacuum bagging and such but so simple parts like this it can be done with just basic things...and lots of time. :)

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Finished the sanding and have it prepped for fiberglass. Not sure if I'll get to it this weekend but would like to have it done sometime this week. I covered the entire buck in tinfoil to protect the foam from the resin and I also want to hopefully keep it intact since if I need to make any changes it will be much easier to start with the shape already done.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Sad, but I still haven't laid any fiberglass onto the fairing :( However, I did pick up a set of CL pipes from __Z__ here on the forum, thanks Z. Mailman showed up while I was out in the garage so I just had to try them on for size.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Have the fiberglass put down and have it about 80% smoothed out. I've started designing the bracket that will support it as well but that is going to take some time to make since I'm very green in this area. I'm first going to build a prototype out of some scrap metal I have laying around just so I can test it out before buying the real metal. Thanks to Big Rich for taking the time to answer my questions.

Ignore the cutouts for the clipons, I can't fully shape them until I actually have the fairing mounted and I can see how large they'll need to be.

Re: Deacon's CB350 - Fairing?

Before I started in on the bracket I wanted to get a center line drawn on the fairing and get the hole cut out for the headlight. So far I just cut it out large enough for the glass portion of the bulb to show, not sure if I'll leave it like this or enlarge it to show some of the chrome ring. May have to mess around with it in Photoshop to see how it looks both ways, that way I can get an idea on how it will look with the chrome before making the hole larger. I'm thinking now though that I'll show the ring since the light looks a bit small as it is now.

Also included a picture showing the headlight with the chrome ring, it will basically make the hole 2 cm larger (diameter).
